Issues raised by the targeting of national and local audiences by international or global institutions is very impactful on many small businesses that are trying to grow. This is due to the concept of the “big guy” vs the “little guy” where the big guy in a certain media can control an entire genre without letting smaller businesses be able to be incorporated. An example of this is a company like EA within video games who has control of many sports games such as FIFA™, Battlefield™, Apex Legends™, The Sims™, Madden NFL™ and many more. In these games such as FIFA and Madden NFL specifically they have gained full ownership of the rights of the players within their game meaning that the “little guy” if they wanted to make a sports game are lawfully unable to use the big names such as “Tom Brady” in an American football games or “Lionel Messi” in football. An example of a small independent company that is affected by this is a company like Konami, the producer of Pro evolution soccer (PES) This game is like that of FIFA however, they are not allowed to use real names of teams, players, and leagues, and instead must produce fake names. This really affects a game company like this because if they were to use real names it would be considered an infringement of privacy and they can be sued or taken down for it. If they do not though, then they are at a significant disadvantage because most fans of football would want to use real names of real players and teams. This means that the “big guy” also has an upper hand in advertising and distribution because as a “conglomerate” like entity they can advertise what they have easier and better due to the ownership they have while the smaller entity like Konami will have a much harder time of doing so due to EA having a bigger ownership within that media landscape. Discuss the ways in which the candidates own experiences of media consumption, illustrate wider patterns and trends in audience behavior.
The ways I have consumed media in the way video games illustrate wider patterns and trends in audience behavior because whenever a new game would get extremely popular in a short amount of time such as games like Fortnite and among us, I would also play those games and recommend them to my friends. The ways I would figure out about these new popular games would be by platforms such as Twitch and YouTube, streaming services that are used to display these games to popularize them. This affects audience behavior because the more game trends such as in my example the more people consume it which will continue the trend until there are no more people to consume the product. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
I integrated technology into my project by using software's edit and design the pages within my magazine with the desired effect to create a product that would give the greatest and most impressionable affect upon its readers. I also used online websites to better understand how I should design my magazine to see how to convey the effects I wanted. To do this, I had to find the correct design types such as pictures and text that would make my magazine stand out and engage with audiences that would see my project. I feel that these technologies have especially helped me improve my product and without them, I would be significantly less knowledgeable of the skills that I have acquired which will help me with my final project. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
My production skills developed throughout this project immensely. At the beginning of developing my magazine, especially the cover, I did not know how to manage the software I was using, nor even know how to pick out good images or designs for what I was striving to create. As the project has gone on however, I now know how to use the software very well and how to navigate through it while realizing what designs to strive for and be able to perform for my magazine pages. This software is Canva, and is easy to use for what I need to make my magazine as engaging as possible. This did not mean however that the process itself is easy. To do my first article with this site, I had to use trial and error to get what I considered to be a perfect page. Overall, I am now very confident in my abilities and think my magazine will come out very well. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?
My product engages with audiences by having a wide variety of topics in the sports world that all sports fans would be happy to tune in to and see the opinions of. Due to this magazine being based on sports this leads my real text product being especially easier to distribute. As stated, before my magazine will gaze upon a multitude of topics so this magazine can be distributed in any sports-related area, this can include sports outlets, parks, and video game distributors. The reason this can be distributed through video game distributors is because my product will also be speaking about eSports, a new sport that has to do with playing video games at a competitive and pro level. My product can also be distributed on other online websites that talk about sports and report on sports stories. This will make my product very assessable and intertwined with topics that people will also be interested in looking at in the first place. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?
My product challenges the normal convention of sports magazine because contrary to the usual, my article is based on my opinions. This is different than usual magazines because most sports magazines are based on statistics and displays of interesting events that are happening in the sports world. This includes highlights, stats, and standing, while my sports magazine will focus on a specific sports topic that would allow me to express my opinions and how I feel about certain topics. Most sports magazines also only focus on one sport while my magazine will tackle a multitude of different subjects. My product also represents social groups by expressing a culture that Is especially important to many people across the globe. This culture is sports fans, and my magazine is directly targeting them and the issues that are being talked about to all audiences. These issues represent social groups because these are issues that are constantly being discussed in the sports world which has become a part of American and global cultures where sports are heavily involved with their lives and I will be representing these cultures by giving my opinions on said discussed issues. |
